  History And Heritage of - Medinipur During third century AD a chieftain, named, PRANAKAR ruled the terrain kingdom of SHIKHAR BOOMI (now Singhbum of Jharkhand State).  His eldest son, MEDINIKAR moved southward and settled at this area.  His seat of rule was named after him as MEDINIPUR. This district saw Bargi invasion in 1742. This district saw Maratha invasion in 1760. The great Novelist Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was posted in this district as Deputy Collector. This district saw Sepoy Mutiny in 1857. This district was annexed to British Rule in 1860. Police came into operational  after Act-V of 1861.   Rani Siromoni Garh: Resort near Karnagarh temple In this era of concrete jungle a little greenery gives you the feel like oasis.Recently govt of west bengal developed a resort near medinipur city named Rani Siromoni Garh on the land of Karnagarh royal family. Karnagarh (also written as Karnagar) is a village and a gram panchayat in the Salboni block in the Medinipur Sadar subdivision of the Paschim Medinipur district in the state of West Bengal, India.   Karnagarh fort consisted of about 100 bighas of land, stretching for about 4 miles, that was surrounded by the Parang River. It was about 4 miles north of Midnapore. The inside of the fort was divided into two parts, the andar mahal for the royal family and the sadar mahal for others. The temples of Dandesvara and Mahamaya, the ruling deities of Karnagarh, were located to the south of the fort. Pathra The village of tample Pathra, on the bank of the river Kangsabati, is a village of temples. There are 34 temples in the village, all over 200 years old. Barely 10 km from Midnapore town, this nondescript hamlet is a treasure trove for those who like to travel back in time. The history of Pathra goes back to the Gupta age, when the place was the hinterland of Tamralipta port, a gateway to southeast Asia.
